Kitchen Renovation Checklist

The holiday season is upon us, and if your 2019 New Year’s resolution includes the words kitchen renovation, you have a busy and exciting year ahead of you. You’ll be spending time picking countertops, deciding on whether or not you need a kitchen island, and measuring for your breakfast bar. To help you get started, follow our checklist, and bring those new kitchen countertops to life.

Set Your Budget

The first step toward your shiny kitchen renovation and that great kitchen island you’ve had your eye on is figuring out how much money you want to spend. This will not only allow you to control costs but will also guide you toward the kitchen of your dreams. By setting a limit on what you are willing to spend, you also set a limit on the types of countertops and cabinets that you choose from.

Hire a Contractor

If your budget allows it, bringing a contractor into your kitchen renovation project is one of best ways to ensure a successful project. Your contractor should help you with kitchen design ideas as you look into materials, spacing, appliances, plumbing, electricity, and flooring, as well as handle building codes and permits.

Check Your Calendar

Kitchen renovations can be disruptive to your home life. The noise, workers, and general mess could be disruptive to school studies and work-from-home adults. Find a time that will have limited interference to your routine. Many people prefer to renovate in the summer, as the weather is more suitable to eating outside.

Order Your Materials

While many of the products and materials that are going into your kitchen are standard products, some, like kitchen islands and countertops may need some customization. Make sure to order everything to arrive before construction begins, so that you don’t end up with costly construction delays.

Create a Temporary Kitchen Space

During the time when your kitchen is unusable, you’ll need an area in your home to prepare and cook food. At a minimum, you’ll need your refrigerator, a microwave, and sink to keep your family functioning. Set up an area that you can use during the renovation.

Renovate Your Kitchen

Once you have everything in place, it’s time for the work to begin. With careful preparations, you can build the kitchen of your dreams, and cross at least one item off your 2019 New Year Resolution list.
