How to Keep Your Quartz Countertop Sparkling Clean

The past decade has seen quartz steadily grow into the kitchen countertop of choice for many people renovating their home. While cost and durability are certainly key factors driving people choosing quartz for their kitchen islands and breakfast bars, its reputation as an easy-to-maintain surface cannot be overlooked. Quartz countertops are non-porous, so they won’t stain or become a place where bacteria can fester.

Still, it’s important to understand how to clean the daily spills that turn your stunning kitchen countertops into sticky messes. With the right cleaning supplies, you can keep your kitchen island looking new for years to come.

Routine Cleanup

The best time to clean any spill on your kitchen island or breakfast bar is before the spill has time to dry. Using non-abrasive sponges combined with warm, soapy water, you can quickly clean the remains of any spills. Hard and Dry Cleanup

Unfortunately, we can’t always get to spills while they are still fresh. If you’ve had some spills that had enough time to dry, spray some vinegar onto the messy area, and cover it with a damp cloth. This will help loosen up the mess and make it easy to wipe away with a sponge and warm water.

If you have some dried gunk on your counter, like gum, putty, or paint, begin by wiping the area down with a soft rag and some mild detergent. Then, use a plastic scraper to gently remove hardened buildup. Complete the cleanup with a non-bleach degreaser and a quick rinse, which will remove all signs of the mess. 

Getting Out Tough Stains

Getting a sticker adhesive or sticky caramel off your kitchen island can pose a special challenge. Your best bet is using an adhesive remover, such as Goo Gone, on the area. Pour some of the cleaner onto the sticky area, let it sit for about 10 minutes, and then wipe it away with warm water.

Permanent markers pose a special challenge to quartz countertops. For best result, use rubbing alcohol to remove the stain. Simply douse your cleaning rag with rubbing alcohol, and scrub continuously until the stain disappears.  After the stain is gone, give the counter a good wash with some warm, soapy water.

Never Ever…

Avoid using abrasives, acids or alkaline cleaners, which may dull the surface. If you are buying a strong cleaner, check to ensure it is safe to use with quartz.
